Our Soon Is Now festival flyer: “space music born from the crayon galaxy.”

Space music born from the crayon galaxy. At Soon Is Now, Nicole and I brought Scribble Scores to Long Dock Park in Beacon. A geodesic dome, natural pigments, children and adults making marks: the material for an afternoon of playing together.

The dome

Build the room, then play it

A dome gives us a temporary place to gather. The wooden frame can hold the drawings while the people around it make the music. Building, painting and performing belong to the same situation; someone arriving in the park can find a way into the work.

Natural pigments / graphic scores

Marks from the landscape

We worked with pigment made from natural materials. The marks carry something of where they were made, then become instructions for sound. The people who make the scores can also play them. There is room for a practiced musician, a parent, a child and a person picking up an instrument for the first time.

An afternoon at Long Dock Park

The flyer invited people to join the geodesic dome installation at 1pm and the all-ages workshop at 2pm. Soon Is Now’s fifth annual festival took place from 1 to 5pm, with performances and visual art encountered on a walk through the park.
