The Geodesic Sonic Receptacle Sound System (GSRSS) is an artwork distributed to communities for their own use.

Sonic Receptacles changes consciousness with subtle placement in performance/installation of objects/instruments embedded with bluetooth speakers. I have built a portable customized multi speaker bluetooth system that receives an external audio source transmitted via bluetooth connectivity. The 'distance' between the speakers and source audio glitches the signal creating the effect of a multi channel system. The distance causes indeterminate distortion and becomes the 'composer.'

The 16 foot Geodesic Dome that can be built for use as a public artwork, or set inside an exhibition hall or community center.

The Geodesic Dome is made of 1 inch wide wood dowels. It is a skeleton, that can be covered, or stay bare. I attach the speakers inside the dome, creating a portable concert venue. The dome, takes less than an hour to be built using a set of 'hubs' to attach the wood dowels.

This artworks provides material support for diverse artists to engage with the system and create artworks of their own design, using the portable dome and sound system.

My research of the history of Geodesic Dome building as a site for public artwork stems from my awareness of the New York community organization CHARAS. “CHARAS, The Improbable Dome Builders is Syeus Mottel's (my father) documentation of a community in New York's Lower East Side in the early 1970s, and their desire to build a geodesic dome in a reclaimed vacant lot underneath the Manhattan Bridge.

CHARAS, in the 1970’s also built a portable thirty foot geodesic dome that was used in a variety of spaces for public performance. On May 4,1974, the dome was installed at Lincoln Center as a site for performance organized by Joseph Papp.

My work expands the legacy of CHARAS’s Geodesic Dome by organizing performance in and around domes. It is an entry point for collaborative research and new forms of public participatory media so other people (not just myself), can use the GSRSS for their own creative practices. The Distribution Grant disseminates an artwork that expands community power. It is an invaluable resource for artists, performers, and the people who encounter and hear the system in action!
